First class experience!
The rooms are comfortable and well equipped, including tea/coffee, iron. Lovely bath shower, just missing a handrail for us oldies.
The food in the restaurant also first class.
Lastly, many thanks to receptionists for friendly service and help, and to Chloe waiting in the restaurant.
There's lots to like about this hotel. Handy location, food mostly good, at times very good.
Beds comfortable, rooms small but well equipped with very good showers. Service a bit inconsistent but fine..
Unfortunately I won't be returning or recommending the hotel to my colleagues who visit Colchester regularly, for one reason only: The very loud music.
It's Tuesday evening at 11.15pm and the loud music from the bar has only just been turned down to a level that will no longer prevent me from sleeping. It's still audible but it's no longer sounds like I'm in a tent at a music festival. It was the same last night, and I expect it will be tomorrow too.
Perhaps it's not as much of a problem on the higher floors, but I do not recommend this hotel for anyone that wishes to get to sleep at a reasonable hour.
As long as you don’t mind staying up really late, this is the place for you. We were prepared for the loud bar beneath us, but we didn’t sign up for drunk people shouting at the top of their lungs down the halls at all hours. Even earplugs won’t be sufficient.
Our room was lovely, clean and spacious, I especially liked the Tudor style, but its central location in the hall was unfortunate. The breakfast was also very bland, but the atmosphere downstairs was nice.
I’m told the hotel also owned by Surya across the street isn’t any quieter because of the bar across from it. Guess that’s to be expected if you’re staying on the high street.
We stayed here for a weekend, 2 nights for £200 including meals was very reasonable. The room was comfortable and clean, maybe a little lacking on ventilation and a bit noisy but not excessive for a city centre hotel. The food was OK but what stood out was the service. The manager who came to help us park our car with trailer including getting the head chef to move his motorbike, the waitress with the keen sense of humour who provided an excellent review of the new Barbie film, the front desk staff who ensured we didn't get overcharged, another waitress who went to great lengths to obtain the cream for the scones - all very friendly and helpful. I would recommend this hotel.
A lovely, old historic hotel that has the fantastic aroma of wood smoke in the lobby.
It has a great period atmosphere, but for me, this is somewhat spoiled by the irreverent modern artworks used as decoration on the walls.
The room was good, the shower great, but it was quite noisy during the night, being at the front of the hotel. Maybe requesting a room at the back would be an idea if you're a light sleeper.
Perfect location on the high street. Busy hotel with a welcoming atmosphere. Room was tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean with a very comfortable bed. The only negative was the view from the window of a flat roof with numerous aircon units. Breakfast was delicious 😋. Thank you. Will definitely stay here again!
A great hotel . This was our third visit and we were disappointed that the menu was unchanged. The addition of mugs instead of cups & saucers in the restaurant isn’t a good move either. Mugs are for high street caffs. The room was as always spotless & a good size with a decent sized bathroom . The majority of the staff are smiley and chatty ( the waitress for breakfast literally rolled her eyes when I asked for some cream for our coffees though , and isn’t chatty with everyone we noted), they have moved to cafetières with breakfast , unfortunately they’re stainless steel and covered in marks. If these were sorted out it would have been a 5⭐️ review
We went here for dinner.
What a sweet delight, wonderfully decorated inside, has a very warm, grand, unusual but delightful feel about it.
The restaurant is located to the back left, loads of bar seating areas and comfy looking sofas on our way through.
We had a choice from a special menu and unfortunately the 2 things, my mother wanted was unavailable, which wasn't a great start.
There was quite a wait from ordering to actually receiving the starter.
What we did get was wonderful, we ordered the soup of the day.. Mediterranean vegetables & chickpeas, it was really tasty, had to ask for butter but that was no troubles for our servers.
My son had olives, which he said were amazing.
Our mains was chicken pot pie and my partner the burger. Omg, the mash was amazing, so was the broccoli; seasoned in a wonderful sauce. The chicken pie, had a creamy sauce, full of big chucks of chicken and loads of vegetables, felt like quality ingredients were used and probably why everything took a little longer than usual.
My partner really enjoyed his burger, although I do think he got food envy lol.
Very enjoyable, would definitely recommend a meal and drinks here.
Would have to look up other reviews for the hotel rooms.
